4 Simple Tips for the Best Results

Keep these in mind so your measurements are always right on the dot.

TIP 01

Keep Zoom at 100%

Make sure your browser isn't zoomed in or out. Press Ctrl+0 (Cmd+0 on Mac) to reset it.

TIP 02

Look Straight Down

Look straight down at your screen. Looking from the side can make lines seem slightly shifted because of the glass.

TIP 03

Extra Monitor? Check with a Card

If you plug your laptop into a big screen, hold any card against it once to make sure the size matches.

TIP 04

Measuring Longer Things

If an object is longer than your screen, slide a sheet of paper underneath, make a pencil mark at the edge, and measure in two parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about measuring on screens, screen safety, and calibration.

How accurate is this online ruler?
When properly calibrated, this online ruler provides sub-millimeter precision with true 1:1 physical scale. Because computer and smartphone displays are manufactured with a fixed grid of physical pixels, calibrating the virtual ruler locks its markings to your screen's exact pixel density (PPI). Once calibrated using a standard payment card or your display diagonal, it is just as reliable as a conventional plastic or wooden ruler for everyday physical measurements. To achieve the highest accuracy, view your screen straight on (perpendicular) to eliminate parallax distortion caused by the protective glass thickness.
Why does an online ruler need calibration?
Web browsers cannot automatically detect the physical dimensions of your monitor or smartphone display. By default, web standards assume a generic pixel density of 96 pixels per inch (PPI). In reality, modern screens range anywhere from 90–110 PPI on desktop monitors to 140–220 PPI on laptops, and over 460 PPI on high-resolution smartphones. Without calibration, an on-screen virtual ruler can appear 30% to 50% larger or smaller than actual size. Calibrating aligns the virtual scale with your screen's physical pixel pitch for genuine 1:1 actual-size measurement.
Why is the ruler not accurate, and how do I fix it?
If the ruler does not match physical dimensions, the issue is almost always caused by browser zoom or an uncalibrated screen scale. Here is how to fix it in seconds:

• Reset Browser Zoom to 100%: Press Ctrl + 0 (Windows) or Cmd + 0 (Mac) to ensure browser zoom is at default 100%.
• Recalibrate with a Standard Card: Click Calibrate in the top menu and select Credit Card. Align any standard payment card, ID, or driver's license (standard ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 size of 85.60 mm) to the on-screen card outline and click Apply.
• Check OS Display Scaling: If your operating system uses display scaling (like 125% or 150%), performing the credit card calibration directly on that screen will automatically compensate for it.
Can I use my iPhone or Android as a ruler?
Yes, you can use your iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone as an accurate actual size ruler directly in your mobile web browser without installing any app from the App Store or Google Play. RealLineal is fully responsive and touch-optimized. Simply open the website on your phone, complete a quick credit card calibration or select your phone model, and lay your small object—such as screws, rings, coins, keys, or craft parts—flat against your phone screen to measure in millimeters, centimeters, or inches.
How can I measure an object that is longer than my screen?
You can measure items longer than your display using the continuous marking method:

1. Lay a sheet of paper underneath or directly adjacent to your device.
2. Align the starting edge of the object with the 0 mark on the screen.
3. Make a gentle pencil mark on the paper or object where the ruler reaches the screen's edge (for example, at 15 cm or 6 inches).
4. Shift the object so that your pencil mark aligns with the 0 mark again, then measure the remaining length.
5. Add the measured segments together to get the exact total length.
Will placing physical objects scratch my screen?
For most everyday items, no. Modern smartphones, tablets, and laptops use chemically toughened glass (such as Corning Gorilla Glass) with a Mohs hardness rating of 6 to 7. Everyday materials like plastic cards, wooden items, paper, coins (copper and nickel), and fingernails are significantly softer and cannot scratch the glass. However, very hard materials like hardened steel screws, abrasive grit/sand, quartz, or unpolished gemstones can cause micro-scratches if pressed firmly. Safety tip: Lay items down gently rather than sliding them across the screen, or place a clean sheet of paper on the glass as a protective layer.
Is this online ruler completely free to use?
Yes, RealLineal is 100% free to use with unlimited measurements on any device. There is no subscription, no registration, no hidden paywall, and no app installation required. You can bookmark the tool and use it whenever you need an instant, calibrated virtual ruler in centimeters, millimeters, or inches.
